3 Hockets includes three interlocking compositions for guitar duo played by Marguerite Brown and Jay Arms. These works are not for just any two guitars, however. Each piece features a distinct pairing of guitars with unique tunings. In James Tenney’s "Harmonium #2", two electric guitars tuned 30¢ apart explore arpeggiated harmonies made possible by the tuning differential. Marguerite Brown’s "Duet" juxtaposes two different refretted guitars using distinct just intonations. One guitar is the Lou Harrison Resophonic Guitar, featuring an 11-limit just tuning, and the other is a nylon string guitar with a different 11-limit just tuning called “Daisy”, created by Brown especially for this piece. The final piece by David Mahler is an arrangement of the solo, minimalistic piano piece "Only Music Can Save Me Now", made by Arms and Brown for classical guitar duo. The two guitarists in this arrangement mirror the two hands of the solo pianist in the original, in which the left hand plays a repeating pattern, while the right interlocks to produce subtly changing composite melodies.
